SUBJECT: SYMPTOMS & FLU TRACKING
UW-Stout has seen a small, but steady increase in the number of students with influenza-like symptoms during the week of September 21st -27th. While area medical providers (including Stout Student Health Services) are advised by the State Health Department to not conduct routine tests for the H1N1 virus, the Health Department’s influenza tracking reports show that H1N1 is present in our area, as well as throughout the state.
Students and staff should remember that it is not necessary to see a doctor if you are generally healthy and you develop flu symptoms, such as a fever above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, cough and body aches.
However, people in the following high risk groups that have flu symptoms should consult their doctor:
- Pregnant women
- Those with a chronic disease, such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease or a heart condition, cancer, or a weakened immune system
- Children under 5 or adults older than 65
If you have flu symptoms, it is recommended that you stay home for 24 hours after fever. And the fever need to be gone without the aid of pain relievers.
If you have flu symptoms and need medical advice, or tips on self-care, please call Student Health Services at 715 232-1314. Please be patient if put on hold, we are serving many students right now. DO NOT come to the clinic, unless you call first, and are advised to do so.
CLASSES
Students who are experiencing flu-like symptoms that will cause them to miss class should contact the Dean of Students office. The Dean of Students office will then send notification to instructors. At the same time, instructors who are being contacted individually by students should request that the students contact the Dean of Students office at 715-232-1181.
