H1N1 Virus Information

Student Health Services has a lot of information on their website about H1N1 Virus (formerly known as the Swine Flu) and can be found by clicking here. Check out their navigation bar on the left of their page.

In addition, we want you to know that the residence hall custodial staff is taking some added precautions to help reduce the possibility of germs being spread. They are using a disinfectant that has a kill rate of 60 seconds (vs. the product that has a 10 minute kill rate as is usually used), and they are changing their gloves when going from one area to another to minimize cross contamination.

Here are some information we can offer you about the H1N1 virus:

Symptoms:

  • sudden fever above 100°F
  • sudden coughing
  • stuffy or runny nose
  • sore throat
  • body aches
  • possible vomiting or diarrhea

Students who are showing symptoms of H1N1 virus should:

-contact the Health Center by calling x1386 (triage nurse).

DO NOT GO to the Health Center.

-call the Dean of Student Officeat x1181 to report that they’ll be out

of class for a few days.  They can notify professors & employers.

-go home, if possible.  Otherwise, self-isolate by:

  • staying in their room; leave only to use the bathroom
  • not attending classes, events, or gatherings
  • not going to the dining hall – a friend can get them sick trays from the cafeteria (forms at front desk).
  • covering their cough or sneeze with their sleeve, shirt, handkerchief, etc.; wearing a mask or bandana if they need to be around roommate or other people
  • regularly wiping down all surfaces with disinfectant wipes (starter supply at front desk).  This includes door knobs, computer mouse & keyboard, Microfridge, dresser & closet handles, light switches, etc.
  • having a friend run errands, shop, etc.
-stay isolated until their fever has been gone for 24 hours (without fever-reducing medication).

Students whose roommate is showing symptoms of H1N1 should:

  • keep some distance from their roommate; possibly sleep in a friend’s room for a few days.  If they are unable to find a temporary place to stay, they should contact their Hall Director for assistance.
  • wear a mask (available at the front desk) or bandana when they are in close proximity (within 6 feet) to their roommate.
  • wash their hands frequently, especially after being near their roommate.
  • wipe down surfaces, especially shared surfaces, with disinfectant wipes (starter supply at front desk).

For more information on the H1N1 virus, click on the Student Health Services website here or on the University's H1N1 website here.

Hovlid Hall Remodeling and Dining Addition

Work began this summer on the new dining hall phase of this project. A complete remodeling of Hovlid Hall will begin in January 2010. Fleming & Hovlid Halls will also be connected to each other and to the new Dining Hall when everything is finished. Here is a sketch of what it will look like:
