What is it?
The Respondus LockDown Browser is a customized browser that increases the security of quiz delivery in D2L. When students use the Respondus LockDown Browser to access a quiz, they are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications. Once a quiz is started, students are locked into it until it’s submitted for grading.
How do I use it?
Students- First, open the Student Quick Start Guide [PDF] for download and installation instructions.
- Next, go to http://www.respondus.com/lockdown/information.pl?ID=716935999 to download the software.
- When you have a quiz that requires the Respondus LockDown Browser, open the browser. It will take you directly to Learn@UW-Stout. After logging in, entering the class and starting a quiz, you will no longer be able to access anything on your computer until the quiz is submitted.
- First, make sure all of your students have installed the Respondus LockDown Browser.
- If there are students who haven't yet used the LockDown Browser, set up a simple practice quiz so students can test their browser installation.
- On the Restrictions tab of the quiz under Security Options check the Respondus LockDown Browser: __ Required to take this quiz checkbox. This will make the quiz accessible only with the Respondus LockDown Browser.
- When students open the LockDown Browser, they are taken directly to Learn@UW-Stout. After logging in, entering the class and starting a quiz, they will no longer be able to access anything on their computer until the quiz is submitted.
Additional Tips and Suggestions:
- If audio/video files are used in a quiz, the media player must be embedded in the question itself. This is the only way that students will have access to the control buttons, such as play, start, pause and stop.
- Respondus LockDown Browser will maintain the “locked” testing environment even if a question contains a link to another web page (which opens another, secure browser window). However, all links that may appear on the new web page will be blocked by the browser, so be sure the content that students must see is available from the initial, linked page.
