What is STAR?


Student Technological Assistance and Resources (STAR) is an independent division within the Telecommunication and Networking (T&N) department at UW-Stout. STAR is a students-managed organization that's focus is to provide students with a solid background in technical skills and customer service, benefiting them and prospective employers.

What does STAR do at the University?


STAR employees are responsible for delivering technology services to the campus community in a wide variety of functional area in the following areas: ASK5000 Help Desk, PC & Printer Repair, Telecommunication, General Access Computer Lab and Departmental Computer Labs.

Who works for STAR?


STAR employs about 100 students from a variety of academic majors at UW-Stout. Equal opportunity is extended to all students who apply regardless of academic major. STAR is not limited to being staffed by students; STAR is entirely managed by students of UW-Stout.

What Training do STAR employees receive?


STAR employees have five required training classes plus additional departmental classes are given to strengthen both the technical and the professional sides of the employment environment.

What skills do STAR employees learn?


STAR employees learn many useful skills throughout their employment. These include: Management skills in leadership, customer service, communication, recruiting, evaluation, strategic planning, projects, teamwork, and negotiation.
  • Extensive work history in a diverse and professional workplace.
  • Good work habits and respect for the responsibilities entrusted to them.
  • An understanding from experience that every person in an organization must carry out his/her job assignments in order to move the organization forward.
  • Professional maturity and a higher state of readiness in contrast to traditional students from other institutions.

How can I work for STAR?


Everyone is eligible to work for STAR. To work for STAR, first check our Job Opportunities page to see what positions we have available, we do most of our hiring at the end of each semester. Then fill out our Online Application or our Printable Application. If you choose to fill out the printable application, return it to Julie McFadden in Room 321 Millennium Hall. Our Online Applications are directly sent to our database and is checked daily. If no positions are currently open, you may still fill out an application and we will hold it for you until a position becomes available.
