Graduate Student Access to UW-Stout Software

Graduate student access to campus software is limited due to licensing restrictions.   UW-Stout owns many educational licenses that will only allow UW-Stout to install software on campus-owned computers.  Most of these licenses specifically prohibit installations on non-campus-owned computers.   However, there are two software titles at this time that UW-Stout can offer for installation to actively enrolled graduate students (see Graduate Student Enrollment Requirements below) for use on their personally-owned computers.  The software titles available to graduate students are Microsoft Office 2007 and SPSS.  Below are the basic criteria for both software titles.

Microsoft Office

Graduate students can download Office 2007 (Windows version) or Office 2008 (Mac version) from the following link:

A valid e-mail username and password are needed to access this page.  The graduate student must be on campus to download and install Microsoft Office.  Microsoft Office is a very large install and Ask5000 recommends not installing it over a wireless internet connection.

SPSS 16 (Windows only)

SPSS Installation Request:  The student will need to call Ask5000 and create a helpdesk ticket or stop at the Ask5000 helpdesk located in Millennium Hall.  When a ticket is created someone from Ask5000 will contact the student and setup a time for installation on campus.  Students requesting installation must bring their computer to the Millennium Hall Helpdesk for installation of SPSS.

Graduate Student Enrollment Requirements:  Graduate Students must be actively enrolled at the time of software request for installation.  An “actively enrolled” student for this software application is defined as a student paying tuition at the time of SPSS installation request.  An IP (In Progress) status does not qualify a student as “actively enrolled” in terms of this application.

Computer Requirements:   Computer must meet several hardware and operating system (OS) requirements.  At this time in order to operate the latest version of SPSS, the student’s PC must have at least XP Home.  SPSS hardware requirements to operate the latest version are at least RAM: 512 MB; (1GB is recommended by SPSS Inc.) and 450 MB of available hard-disk space for installation.  Apple computers at this time are not supported.

Computer Health Requirements:   Computers must be in good working order.  A UW-Stout technician will use reasonable efforts to install SPSS.  If the technician finds that computer is not in good working condition and SPSS can’t be installed it is the student’s responsibility to remedy condition of the computer so SPSS can be installed.  It is not the responsibility of UW-Stout technicians to fix graduate students personally-owned computers.

On-Campus Installation:   Graduate students must make arrangements for on-campus installation of SPSS.  There are no exceptions to this rule due to UW-Stout’s licensing obligations.   UW-Stout’s licensing with SPSS prohibits copying and sending SPSS installation media (CDs or DVDs) off campus.  The graduate student will also be required to sign an agreement that they will uninstall SPSS when they are no longer a student at UW-Stout and that they will only use the software for educational purposes.   Only after the above criteria are met will a UW-Stout technician install SPSS on a graduate student’s personally-owned computers.

License Renewal:  The license for SPSS expires every year at the end of December.  Every user of SPSS is required to renew the SPSS license if they wish to continue using SPSS. The SPSS license will not be renewed if the student is not actively enrolled.  UW-Stout will only support the last two versions of SPSS released by SPSS Inc.  There are two ways to update the license on a computer; Click here or search the ASK5000 Knowledgebase for “update SPSS license”.  Follow the appropriate link in the answer area for updating the SPSS license.  Graduate students must be on-campus and online to run the update or use VPN (Virtual Private Network) from off-campus.  A valid e-mail username and password are to access the license renewal page.
