The conversion of the university Web site to CommonSpot, a Web content management system, simplifies Web publishing for the campus. We are currently in a transition period, with most sections of the site converted to CommonSpot; there are still some sites using Dreamweaver or Contribute while preparing to convert. Consequently, our official publishing methods are presently CommonSpot, the university template system used with Dreamweaver, and Contribute Web authoring software.
Faculty and instructors should complete their faculty profile in CommonSpot.
The basic information for everyone else is below. Assistance is always available during open labs, which are listed on the CommonSpot Help page.
Contribute maintenance
Contribute users may continue to use the software until your site is converted into CommonSpot. For assistance in configuring Contribute, please contact Barbara Button (buttonb).
Sites for administrative and support offices
Administrative offices and support units produce their own Web pages using CommonSpot in cooperation with the Web coordinator and in accordance with the Stout Web Publishing Standards. Production assistance is available on a chargeback basis from the STAR student team. Dan Krueger (kruegerdani), the technical webmaster, oversees the STAR group.
To make sure you do not duplicate content that is already posted elsewhere, please check with the web coordinator, Barbara Button, before publishing institution-level information or announcements to the public. We will help you coordinate the linking and publishing of your content so that our site is clear and consistent for users.
Department owned server
If you choose this option, you must follow university identity standards, Web policy and use UW-Stout templates.
Academic department sites
The Web coordinator provides CommonSpot templates and consistent formatting for contact information, department staff and links to degree program sites for all academic departments. Departments conduct basic editing and maintenance on their own sites. Additional pages or sections are also welcome, and assistance is available to establish and format these. There is an established file-naming convention for additions to the department sites--please contact Barbara Button if you would like to add sections to your site.
Faculty and instructors create their profile in CommonSpot, which serves as a home page.
Degree program information
All academic and curricular information on the Website is published by the university editor as program and course descriptions change, rendering the Web version the most current. All UW-Stout Web authors must link to the information in these documents rather than re-writing or re-creating similar documents. You must refer to degree programs by their official name. For more information about official program and course descriptions, please contact the Provost's office.
Don Steffen, University Editor, produces and publishes degree program information for the Provost's office. Supplementary information for program Web sites is welcome, and must follow university identity standards. Contact Don (steffend; x1239) if you would like to publish supplemental information for your program site.
